AIRCRAFT CARRIER WOODEN FLIGHT DECKS

#601 ESSEX CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIER (SCB-27C)

US Modern Essex Wood Flight Deck Sections (1964-1990)**

The Modern Essex Wood Flight Deck Sections comprise either 4 or 5 deck sections (depending on scale) cut from 3/32" basswood and are the approximate assembled size listed below. These decks feature countersunk 4-point tie-down rings and a lightly etched flight deck markings. The only portion of the Essex deck without catapults, arresting gear or elevators has been presented, the area just abeam of the island.

The recommended color for a Vietnam War deck is Testors Model Master #1740 Dark Gull Grey (FS36231). The deck centerline striping should be done with Model Master #1745 Insignia White and #1708 Insignia Yellow (FS35381). The landing stripe area is painted Model Master #2034 Engine Grey (FS36076). The clear line is Insignia White and Model Master #1705 Insignia Red (FS31136). The unassisted takeoff line and the landing area edge stripes are Insignia White. Photos seem to indicate the Essex class carriers got the 4-point tie-downs during their FRAM (SCB-144) updates in the early 1960s. This deck pattern is currently found on all of the Essex class ships preserved as museums, making it possible to use this display base even for an SR-71!!

#602 ESSEX CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIER (WW2/KOREA)

US Carrier Wood Flight Deck Sections (1938-1964)**

The Carrier Wood Flight Deck Sections comprise either 4 or 6 deck sections (depending on scale) cut from 3/32" basswood and are the approximate assembled size listed below. These deck section are representative of the typical wood deck found on the US Carriers (CV), Light Carriers (CVL) and Escort Carriers (CVE) built from the Yorktown class (CV-5) in 1938 forwards. As such, they can be represented in several color schemes:

The recommended color for a WW2 deck is Testors Model Master #1719 Insignia Blue (FS35044). The deck striping, if you choose to do any, should be done with Model masters #1741 Dark Ghost Grey (FS36320). While these colors are not an exact match for Flight Deck Stain 21 & 22, they do come close and the overall effect looks good.

The recommended color for a Prewar or Korean War deck is Testors Model Master #2100 RAL8002 Signalbraun. This color is the closest match I can find to the brown deck stain based on photographs and I make no guarantees about the accuracy of this color.  The deck striping, if you choose to do any, should be done with Model Master #1708 Insignia Yellow (FS35381).

The recommended color for a "Vietnam War" era deck (beginning in about 1960) is Testors Model Master #1740 Dark Gull Grey (FS36231). The deck striping, if you choose to do any, should be done with either Model Master #1745 Insignia White or #1708 Insignia Yellow (FS35381). The landing stripe area is painted Model Master #2034 Engine Grey (FS36076). Photos seem to indicate the angled-deck Essex class carriers retained this style of deck until their FRAM (SCB-144) updates in the early 1960s. The unmodified straight-deck Essex units which served as CVSs, CVTs, LPHs and AVTs retained this style of deck until their scrapping.

#603 JAPANESE AIRCRAFT CARRIER (WW2)

Scaled from drawings of the Akagi and Shokaku, these decks represent a section of the bow on the early wartime Japanese aircraft carrier. These deck sections are the same size as their American counterparts and cut from the same size wood. Photos online soon.

American eyewitness observations at the battle of Midway in June 1942 universally reported the Japanese carriers to be in high visibility scheme of a medium warm brown with white markings and a "bright red meatball" on the bow. I recommend using Floquil Railroad color #110133 SP ARMOUR YELLOW for the deck with Model Master #1745 Insignia White for the deck stripes and Floquil Railroad color #110020 CABOOSE RED for the Hinomaru if desired.
